노스웨스턴대 로스쿨 데이빗 밴 잰트 학장


로스쿨 입학 자격으로 직장 경력을 요구해 새바람을 일으켰던 노스웨스턴대 로스쿨의 데이빗 밴 잰트 학장이 2년제 로스쿨 과정을 선보인다고 발표해 다시한번 주목을 받고 있다.

밴 잰트 학장은 “이번 프로그램에서 강조되는 부분 중의 하나가 바로 글로벌시대에 법조계에서 요구되는 적성을 키워주는 것이다. 법 관련 분야에서 적임자가 될 수 있기 위해 필요한 의사 소통력, 팀 워크, 전략적 사고방식, 문화적 차이의 이해, 그리고 리더십을 길러주기 위한 혁신적인 방법을 제공할 계획”이라고 강조했다.

이를 위해 노스웨스턴의 2년제 로스쿨에는 회계, 재무, 통계 같은 분석 기술 양성 코스는 물론 프로젝트 매니지먼트, 소셜 네트워크와 관련된 법률 서비스 능력을 향상시키는 코스를 갖춘다는 것이 밴 잰트 학장의 설명이다. 또한 이번 프로그램의 성패를 가릴 수 있는 시간 관리를 잘 할 수 있는 사람을 모집하기 위해 견실한 직장 경력을 자격 요건으로 요구한 것도 평소 그가 보수적인 로스쿨 제도를 혁신적으로 바꿔나가려는 의지를 갖고 있다는 사실을 잘 보여주고 있다.

빠르게 변화하는 법률 시장은 이제 글로벌 시대를 맞고 있다. 밴 잰트 학장은 “한국의 기업들이 두바이에 나가 사업 계약을 따내듯이 이제 세계의 장벽은 허물어지고 있다”며 “한국과학기술원(KAIST)의 경영학석사(MBA)과정과 우리 로스쿨의 법학석사(LLM) 과정을 동시에 취득할 수 있는 과정을 2005년 한국에서 처음으로 개설하는 협약서를 체결한 이유 중 하나도 바로 글로벌 시대의 경쟁력 있는 인재를 양성하기 위해서였다”고 말했다.

이를 홍보하기 위해 작년 10월에도 한국을 방문했던 밴 잰트 학장은 2009년부터 도입되는 한국의 로스쿨 제도의 성공을 위한 조언도 잊지 않았다. 그는 이제는 글로벌 시장에서 당당히 싸울 수 있는 법적지식과 영어실력으로 무장한 한국의 인재를 적극 양성할 때가 됐다며 “앞으로 다가올 한국의 법률시장 개방에 대비해서라도 새롭게 생기는 한국 로스쿨의 국제화가 시급하다”고 전했다. <이경현 기자>

Northwestern University School of Law opened a new horizon of legal education offering an accelerated two-year JD program starting in 2009. This new program will require the same number of credits as the three-year program, but will cost less because the study will take place in a compressed five-semester period.

It is clear that Dean David Van Zandt put a lot of efforts into this plan. This plan emphasized on competencies such as communication, strategic understanding, quantitative skills, and project management and leadership critical for success in a global law and business environment said Dean Van Zandt.

In addition, he pointed out that the accelerated track will cover analytic skills like accounting, finance statistics, and legal services behavior which will involve social networks, teamwork.
Candidates of new JD program will be required to have two or three years of substantive work experience after college, Dean Van Zandt said. It is also an innovative break with the conservative traditions of law school.

Moreover, Northwestern Law, regarded by the international community as one of the top law schools in the United States, has joined in collaboration with the KAIST Graduate School of Management in South Korea to offer a Master of Laws (LLM) degree program in Seoul since 2005.

This program is part of an effort to prepare students to be effective and strategic working in cross-cultural situations. Korean companies extended its business abroad. This program gives Korean students opportunity to experience American culture and learn English, international transaction said Dean Van Zandt.

When it comes to the Korean law school system introduced this year, he recommend it is important to make students competitive for Korean legal market beginning to open to the world.
